Shivneri Fort
About Shivneri Fort
Shivneri is a 17th-century military fortification set on a rocky spur above the town of Junnar in Pune district. It played a strategic role through the Yadava, Bahmani, Ahmadnagar and later Maratha periods, and is best known today as the birthplace of Shivaji Maharaj.
Visitors typically explore the fort’s gateway and ramparts, visit the small birth chamber associated with Shivaji Maharaj, view the Badami Talav (a central pond), and see statues and memorials dedicated to Jijabai and young Shivaji Maharaj. The fort’s stone architecture, defensive walls and scenic views over the surrounding Sahyadri hills make it popular with history lovers, students and light trekkers. Plan for uneven steps and rocky paths; wear good shoes and carry water.
